Stretching

Well, it’s almost here.

I don’t need to say… you know what it is.

If you haven’t done so already, start limbering up.  Read a book.  Do some math.  Start getting organized.  The successful students in the 21st century do not walk into school waiting to be told what to do.  Instead, they walk into school already ahead of their teachers.  They’ve examined curriculum and syllabi; they’ve read and prepared questions for day one; they’ve planned out their daily schedules so they know what time they have and what time they’d like to have.

It’s almost here, and the race will start sooner than you’d like it to.

You’d better stretch.

Sometimes things get tough…

It’s not always easy. Life.

Sometimes, just when things are going great… POW! You pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and BAM!  Knocked down again.

Sometimes this happens do much, you begin to wonder, “is it worth getting up this time?”

Yes.

Always.

The thing is, life is hard. And that’s a good thing. If it was easy all if the time, nothing would be special… nothing would be worthwhile. It’d all be “blah.” Stuff happens. You get knocked down… sometimes you almost get knocked out. But you ALWAYS get up. It shouldn’t even be an option. Do it for you; for who/what you love. Just keep getting up & living. Soon you’ll see that it’s the getting knocked down & getting up again that makes your time here on Earth worth it.

My garden.

Tomatoes, cucumber, broccoli, eggplant, spinach, basil, peppers, beets & oregano.  I’m also growing raspberries, pumpkins, sunflowers & blueberries.

It’s great to grow; it’s great to harvest.

We’ve had spinach, basil & organo so far, and will be cutting our first broccoli this week.  There’s something special about growing your own food; taking care of yourself, and not relying on others.

That said, without others, I wouldn’t be here.

No one ever “makes it” on their own.  There’ve always been people (parents/guardians, teachers, friends, colleagues, bosses, etc.) that have molded us into who/what we are. There always will be.

Remember them.

My garden needs me to grow.  It also needs soil, water, sun, etc.  The tomato, eggplant, broccoli, etc. doesn’t become a delicious vegetable on it’s own.  It has help along the way.

Take time today, and everyday, to acknowledge and remember those who helped you along the way.

Then continue being great.

Independence Begins Today

Everyone loves to celebrate the 4th of July… so do I, for that matter.  But, really, our celebration begins today.

The 4th is just the day we recognize as telling King George to piss off (in British terms).  Our real independence started today.  Once the celebration is over, the work begins, and THAT is where true independence comes from: work.

It’s one thing to say, “I’m on my own.”  It’s another thing to actually be “on my own.”

Today is the day that I love to celebrate our independence, because it’s today when our independence really matters.  We’ve become great because of the hard work, innovative spirit and drive of people who understood that independence means sacrifice, intensity and determination.  We’ve become the standard because people didn’t stop when they had the right idea, or a good idea, and everyone told them to stop.  We’ve become the ideal for the world because we recognize that independence comes with a heavy cost: hard work that never ends.

I’m going to butcher this African proverb (taken from Thomas Friedman’s “The World Is Flat”):

Every morning, a gazelle wakes up.  It knows that it must outrun the fastest lion, just to stay alive.  Every morning, a lion wakes up.  It knows that it must outrun the slowest gazelle, just to stay alive.  It doesn’t matter if you’re a gazelle or a lion: when the sun comes up, you better start running.

We’ve been running since 1775 (if not before).  We can’t stop now; the race is getting more intense, and our competition is getting faster, stronger.  We’re not getting older and weaker; they’re just improving their game.

Independence, work and determination have gotten us this far.  Let’s keep it going.  Effort.  Drive.  Care.  That’s the mark of a true independent nation.

Happy July 5th.

Tuition Comparison Site Begun by Education Department - NYTimes.com

sarahlee310:

Students and families can compare colleges’ tuitions, the pace at which they are rising and the net cost of attending each college on a new Web site the Department of Education made public on Thursday, fulfilling a legislative mandate.

The new lists, required by the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008, show the institutions with the highest and lowest tuitions, the highest and lowest percentage tuition increases over the last two years, and the highest and lowest net price — that is, the actual price full-time students pay, including room and board, after financial aid like grants and scholarships are taken into account.

In each of several categories — public and private, for-profit and nonprofit, four-year and two-year — the most expensive institutions and those whose costs are rising most rapidly will be required to report to the Education Department why their costs are so high and what they plan to do about it.

Here is the direct link to the site for those who don’t want to use up one of their free visits to the NYT.

Spam sucks

The only good spam is when it’s a Monty Python skit.

Otherwise, spam can eat it.

A day for the beach

It may be overcast here in Maine, but you gotta take the beach time when you can get it. It’s about taking advantage of an opportunity, even if all of the hopes-for components aren’t there. Opportunities for fun, growth, love, or learning don’t always present themselves in ways that would be obvious or even sensical. So, you just gotta make the best with what you’ve got. You’ve got to just make the situation work for you, even if the situation isn’t the ideal.

It’s a matter of perspective. It’s about choice. It’s all in how you approach… well… everything.

Overcast? BEACH!!!
